Multiple Entry & Exit — Your Degree, Your Pace, Your Path

You don’t have to finish in one go. With NEP 2020 you can exit with a Certificate, Diploma or Degree — and come back later. Here’s how.

The basics

What is Multiple Entry & Exit?

Multiple Entry & Exit (MEE) is one of NEP 2020’s most student-friendly reforms. It lets you exit your degree programme at multiple points, re-enter later (even after years), carry your credits forward via the ABC, and earn a credential at each exit.

“You shouldn’t be punished for life’s interruptions. Your education should fit YOUR life, not the other way around.”

The four exits

Certificate, Diploma, Degree, Honours

  1. 🎓Year 1 — Certificate

After ~40 credits, exit with a Certificate in your field. Re-enter for a Diploma within 3 years.

  2. 📜Year 2 — Diploma

After ~80 cumulative credits, exit with a Diploma. Re-enter for a Degree within 3 years.

  3. 🏅Year 3 — Bachelor’s Degree

    After ~120 cumulative credits, exit with a 3-year Bachelor’s. Re-enter for the Honours/Research year within 3 years.

  4. 🔬Year 4 — Honours / Research

After ~160 cumulative credits, exit with a Bachelor’s (Honours) or Bachelor’s with Research — required for direct PhD entry.

Why it matters

Why MEE is a game-changer

  1. 01

    No “wasted year”

Failed an exam, had a family emergency or a health issue? Take a break and come back.

  2. 02

    Career + education balance

Want to work after a Diploma? Go ahead, and re-enter for a Degree later.

  3. 03

    Financial flexibility

Can’t afford four years at once? Earn a Certificate, get a job, return later.

  4. 04

    Life-event friendly

Marriage, a child, a family business, illness — life happens, and MEE respects that.

  5. 05

    Lower dropout

Students who would have dropped out now leave with a recognised credential.

  6. 06

    Multiple pathways

Changed direction? MEE lets you re-enter differently, without judgement.

Coming back

Outside the 3-year window you may need a few bridge courses, but re-entry is still possible.

Real journeys

What MEE looks like in practice

Asha — engineering path

Completed Year 1 of B.Tech, dropped out for a medical emergency, then re-entered at a different college in Year 3 — starting Year 2 with all Year 1 credits intact via ABC. B.Tech in 4.5 years instead of starting over.

Ramesh — Certificate → Diploma → Degree

Took a Certificate in Digital Marketing, worked at an agency for a year, then re-entered for a full BBA — his earlier credits counted, finishing in two more years.

Priya — the Honours path

Completed B.Sc. Physics, joined M.Sc. directly (APAAR + ABC verified, no separate entrance), and moved into a PhD with research credits.

Maharashtra

MEE implementation status

Maharashtra is leading MEE implementation: all state universities are MEE-compliant from 2024–25, UGC guidelines are adopted, and the 4-year UG programme is live at Mumbai University, SPPU Pune, Shivaji University, Dr. BAMU Aurangabad, RTMNU Nagpur and North Maharashtra University, with affiliated colleges rolling out.

  • Confirm with your college: are you NEP MEE compliant?
  • Ask what your re-entry policy is
  • Open your ABC account now
  • Save all marksheets in DigiLocker
  • Apply for scholarships via MahaDBT

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Multiple Entry & Exit mandatory?

No, it’s an option. You can still do a regular 3-year or 4-year degree without exiting.

What if I exit after Year 1 and never come back?

You keep the Certificate and can use it for jobs, lateral entry, or further education.

How long can I take a break?

Three years is the standard window. Some universities allow longer with bridge courses.

Do I have to exit to get a Diploma?

Yes, a Diploma is awarded at a Year 2 exit. If you continue, you earn a Degree (3 years) or Honours (4 years).

Is the Certificate equivalent to a regular degree?

No — a Year 1 Certificate is lower than a Year 3 Degree, but it’s a valid credential for jobs.

Do all colleges offer MEE?

All UGC-recognised colleges must offer MEE by 2026. Check with your specific college.

Is MEE only for UG, or PG too?

Currently MEE is for UG (Bachelor’s). PG is being aligned — check with your university.

Can I transfer colleges AND exit?

Yes. Combine MEE with ABC credit transfer for maximum flexibility.
