NEP 2020 Hub
You don’t have to finish in one go. With NEP 2020 you can exit with a Certificate, Diploma or Degree — and come back later. Here’s how.

The basics
Multiple Entry & Exit (MEE) is one of NEP 2020’s most student-friendly reforms. It lets you exit your degree programme at multiple points, re-enter later (even after years), carry your credits forward via the ABC, and earn a credential at each exit.
“You shouldn’t be punished for life’s interruptions. Your education should fit YOUR life, not the other way around.”
The four exits
After ~40 credits, exit with a Certificate in your field. Re-enter for a Diploma within 3 years.
After ~80 cumulative credits, exit with a Diploma. Re-enter for a Degree within 3 years.
After ~120 cumulative credits, exit with a 3-year Bachelor’s. Re-enter for the Honours/Research year within 3 years.
After ~160 cumulative credits, exit with a Bachelor’s (Honours) or Bachelor’s with Research — required for direct PhD entry.
Why it matters
Failed an exam, had a family emergency or a health issue? Take a break and come back.
Want to work after a Diploma? Go ahead, and re-enter for a Degree later.
Can’t afford four years at once? Earn a Certificate, get a job, return later.
Marriage, a child, a family business, illness — life happens, and MEE respects that.
Students who would have dropped out now leave with a recognised credential.
Changed direction? MEE lets you re-enter differently, without judgement.
Coming back
| Exit point | Maximum gap | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| After Year 2 (Diploma) | 3 years | Direct re-entry to Year 3 |
| After Year 3 (Degree) | 3 years | Direct re-entry to Year 4 (Hons/Research) |
Outside the 3-year window you may need a few bridge courses, but re-entry is still possible.
Real journeys
Asha — engineering path
Completed Year 1 of B.Tech, dropped out for a medical emergency, then re-entered at a different college in Year 3 — starting Year 2 with all Year 1 credits intact via ABC. B.Tech in 4.5 years instead of starting over.
Ramesh — Certificate → Diploma → Degree
Took a Certificate in Digital Marketing, worked at an agency for a year, then re-entered for a full BBA — his earlier credits counted, finishing in two more years.
Priya — the Honours path
Completed B.Sc. Physics, joined M.Sc. directly (APAAR + ABC verified, no separate entrance), and moved into a PhD with research credits.
Maharashtra
Maharashtra is leading MEE implementation: all state universities are MEE-compliant from 2024–25, UGC guidelines are adopted, and the 4-year UG programme is live at Mumbai University, SPPU Pune, Shivaji University, Dr. BAMU Aurangabad, RTMNU Nagpur and North Maharashtra University, with affiliated colleges rolling out.
